USES ; Leaf bud  is administered in decoction to encourage the free discharge of the menses or lochia after delivery when it is scanty. Used in leprosy, fevers, and haemoptysis, and also in cases of children suffering. Tender shoots are also eaten like asperagus.

Moongil arisi is known as bamboo rice, with regional names including baans chawal in Hindi, veduru biyyam in Telugu, and mulayari in Malayalam. It is a rare grain harvested from dying bamboo shoots.
