Description
“Japra seeds” (ஜாப்ரா விதை) can refer to two different seeds: Annatto seeds (Bixa orellana), used for natural coloring and medicine. Annatto seeds (or Jafra seeds/Kumkum seeds) come from the achiote tree and give a red/orange color, while basil seeds are black and swell in water.
“Japra seeds” are generally known as annatto seeds in English. In India, they are known by several names depending on the region and language.
Common Indian names include:
- Latkan (Hindi and Bengali)
- Sinduri or Sindoori (Hindi and Gujarati), often associated with the traditional use as a source for vermilion powder (sindoor)
- Shendri
- Kumkum
- Jafra (Hindi)
- Jabra (local parlance in parts of Andhra Pradesh, where it is cultivated)
- Jafra Maram or Jafra Seed (often used in South India)
- Jolandhar Senduri Hat-ronga Khendur-goch Latkon-jorat (Assamese)
